OPPORTUNITIES WITHIN SURF NATION

Surf Select is a national identification program for players aged U9-U17 who have the talent, drive and ambition to compete against the “Best of the Best”. Through a series of regional and national events, top players are identified to represent Surf Select and compete at some of the top domestic and international competitions across the global youth soccer landscape. Okanagan Surf players will have these advancement opportunities within Surf Nation:

1) Surf Select Regional ID program for U9-U13 players. This will be an ID weekend that takes place in Spokane (WA) every August, bringing together all nominated players from Surf clubs in the Pacific Northwest. There are 7 regional ID locations, and Spokane is our location. Players will participate in training and games over the weekend, with players then selected to the National ID weekend in San Diego every February.
2) U14 Champions League. This is for U14 boys and girls, with teams invited to compete against all other Surf U14 teams from across North America in San Diego every February.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS about the new surf program

  • Why are we changing from WYSA to Surf?

The club wants to increase the overall development of its players, and Surf provides the platform and pathway for WYSA to accomplish this.

  • Is WYSA disappearing completely?

WYSA is still the overarching club program, and the club's recreational programs will still wear the Westside Lakers name.

  • Will the club still feel local and community-based?

Yes, in fact, this will give us the opportunity to grow a stronger Westside based club with a proud commitment to represent the city.

  • Why was this decision made now?

There isn't a perfect time to introduce a large change to club operations, but this point in the season gives us enough time to prepare for the September on-field launch.

  • How will player development improve under SURF?

This enhanced program will increase both the quantity and quality of team training, along with more game opportunities. All of this will mean more development time for our players.

  • Will coaching standards change?

WYSA will be paying for certified coaches in its Surf program, and full accountability to player development will be upheld for all coaches.

  • What about recreational players — are they still important?

WYSA is proud of its recreational roots, and is doubling down on the support provided to its rec teams. This spring, we have invested in more staff acoh support for our recreational teams, along with a dedicated Technical Lead for those teams.

  • Will players train more often?

With a full 10 month program, teams will increase to 3 times per week in a progressive training environment.

  • Will my child stay with their current teammates?

Surf teams will go through evaluations for interested/new players from mid June to early July. We will add committed players with potential to existing teamsas part of the transition.

  • Will fees increase?

To cover the increase in training and games, hiring paid coaches, buying better Nike kit, and covering other enhancements to the program, there will be a rise in the program fees. However, the fees will still be less than half the cost to play BCSPL, and will still be 10-20% less than competitors in the marketplace.

  • Will training locations change?

Training will take place at CNB in the spring and fall, and inside the West Kelowna dome in the winter.

  • What if I can't make an evaluation session?

Please contract Jason, our Surf TD, who will ensure the tracking and evaluation of all players can take place. His email is td@wysa.ca

  • How will parents stay informed during the transition?

The club is planning regular emails, website and social media posts, along with in-person and online info sessions.

  • Will there be financial assistance for this program?

We have heard loud and clear that parents prefer an easier and sustainable payment option for year-round programs rather than an upfront payment. This program will include a July registration fee to secure the fall roster spot, followed by 9 small monthly payments from September through May. There is always the option for   families to apply through funding programs such as KidSport, JumpStart and Athletics4Kids. Outside of these options, the club will work with any member that can prove financial need.
