BRIEF HISTORY

The WYSA Skill Centre was introduced in 2024 by previous club staff. This program was meant to create a higher level training program that fed into team placements for coysa league play. However, upon reviewing the program and its goals in early 2025, Matt (WYSA ED) and Jason (WYSA TD) determined that the program was too focused on creating teams, with a limited number of players benefiting overall, and didn’t accomplish the club’s goal of total player development. Quite frankly, it was excluding players and narrowing a “team” focus too much. Canada Soccer has a comprehensive Skill Centre structure and a mandate that clubs should follow, and one of the clear guiding principles is that “the underlying aim of Skill Centres is to provide the best environment possible to as many young players as possible for as long as possible.” (from the CSA’s document on Skill Centres across Canada)

One of the struggles the club has had over many years was that many players drop out by 14 or 15 years of age, and without a larger base of players that have been developed and included, the club ends up not being able to field teams in the U15 or U16 age groups. This happened again last summer when we had to fold a planned U16 boys team and were required to combine a U14 and U15 girls team due to a lack of numbers overall in those age groups. We strongly felt that without addressing some of these structural issues with the next crop of 7 to 13 year olds in the Skill Centre, and to find a way to increase participation in those key age groups, we were destined to repeat those same issues year over year.

WYSA decided the best course of action was that for the fall and winter (2025-26) program there would be no teams created until more players had an opportunity to join and train in an enhanced Skill Centre program. The philosophy was to encourage more players to experience better training over a 6+ month period. We made the adjustment to fully run the fall and winter program with staff coaches so that the training environment could be a monitored environment for all players.

Our plan was to put development/select teams together again in the U7-U13 age groups by late winter (Feb/March), and we are on track to do this with the inclusion now of appointed coaches in the Skill Centre age groups.

WHERE WE ARE AT

We did accomplish the goal of getting more players into a regular training environment. In fact, we saw an increase in the Skill Centre registration in September by 30%. Some groups were bursting at the seems with double the number of players that joined, and some groups added a few more players to supplement the numbers and give more players these developmental opportunities. Yes we had some growing pains with larger groups, but we are now heading into 2026 with a head of steam to put together good development teams for spring play, with coaches that will be supported by our TD and staff coaches.

TEAM FORMATION

Now that the coaches are being put in place for each U10-U13 development team, those coaches will work with Jason to confirm the players selected for the development teams. Those players will be notified by February 20, and players not selected to a development team will be offered a spot on a recreational team for the spring season.

For players NOT currently in the Skill Centre that wish to play on a development team in the spring, they should reach out to Jason ( td@wysa.ca ). Those players will be invited for 2 training sessions before February 20 to be considered for a spot on a spring Development team.

For players in the U7-U9 age group, coysa and BC Soccer require clubs to balance those teams and they aren’t considered “select” teams. Jason will work with each of those age groups in lining up coaches and building teams before the end of this current development block.

In the spring, U7-U13 Skill Centre teams will practice twice per week with a coysa or toysl game on weekends, whereas there will also be a recreational level at U7-U13 for players looking for less commitment than the Skill Centre program. WYSA will be entering U7-U9 teams in coysa’s regular balanced league, U10-U11 in coysa’s development league, and U12-U13 in the toysl league.

Spring season starts early April through end of June. There will also be a secondary fall season in Sept/Oct for those interested, with details TBD.

Ready for a fast moving, and skill focused tournament format? Tired of watching half your team barely touch the ball during games? Well, our exciting 3v3 event is for your team! With four inflatable fields inside the West Kelowna dome, this is sure to be a FAST and EXCITING event with an emphasis on skill development as the ball rarely goes out of play

THIS IS AN EVENT FOR SELECT TEAMS ONLY (no rec levels this time)

U10-U15 Boys and Girls (2016-2013)

* Will play 3v3 (3 players but no goalkeeper)

* 24 minute game with running time

* $169 registration fee for a team (minimum 5 players required on a roster) - early bird rate is $139 until October 31 using WYSA3v3discount at checkout.

TOURNAMENT DETAILS

* BOYS play on December 13

* GIRS play on December 14

* All games are 24 minutes running time with subs on the fly

* 3 games guaranteed for all teams within a 4 hour block

* U10-U12 teams will play 3 games with no scores or standings

WESTSIDE YOUTH SOCCER is excited to partner with the Unisus School's Everton FC International Academy program for our U4-U7 training program.

Starting November 7, and running for 6 Friday night sessions, this program is for players in the 2019-2022 born age groups. At a great introductory rate of $109 which includes a JOMA training shirt, this is an opportunity to train in West Kelowna with a coach who has worked with the Everton FC academy in the UK and around the world.

ABOUT THE COBSS BURSARY:

The Central Okanagan Bursary & Scholarship Society was established to address a pressing need: helping young people in our community pursue education and training beyond high school. Rising costs for tuition, materials, accommodation, and transportation often made higher education seem out of reach for many promising students.

In response, key leaders from the Central Okanagan’s educational and business communities joined forces to create a solution. The founding members of the (then-called) Bursary Society were businessman Ken Harding, former KSS administrators Harry Dewar and Lou Dedinsky, and Rosemary King from the School Board office. Their collective vision led to COBSS being incorporated under the BC Society Act in 1984, and later receiving conduit status from the BC Gaming Branch, allowing us to distribute awards funded by organizations receiving provincial gaming funds.

Thanks to the dedication of our founders and the ongoing support of the community, COBSS has grown from offering just seven bursaries in 1971 to over 500 awards annually. These bursaries continue to be awarded to deserving local students, helping them take the next steps toward achieving their academic and career goals in the year following their graduation.

PHOTO DAY ANNOUNCED FOR U4 AND U5-U6 PROGRAMS

WYSA has set the photo day for our U4 and U5-U6 programs, on June 7 inside the West Kelowna multisport dome.

The schedule is on this page, and has also been posted on the club wall in 360player for all to see.

Keylight Photography will again be on hand to provide a professional photo shoot for all our players.

The U4 group will have a large group photo, followed by individual headshots. These players should wear their white wysa t-shirts and we request black shorts to create a great look for the group!

The U5-U6 group will have their team photo and headshots done as well. These players should wear their team uniforms (shirts, shorts, socks). As we are on turf, players are welcome to wear runners or soccer boots.

All players are asked to arrive 15 minutes prior to their designated time to check-in and get organized for the photographer!

Thunder and Lightning Policy

If thunder is heard or lightning is seen, all outdoor activity should be suspended immediately, and players, coaches, and spectators should seek safe shelter. Of course, if the forecast is for continued thunder/lightning, a simple cancellation of practice or game and leaving the field is the easiest and safest method to provide safety to the players, coaches and spectators. A game or practice should not resume until 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder or flash of lightning has been seen or heard.

WYSA's recommendation is that if there is a severe weather advisory still in place later in the afternoon relating to thunder and lightning, and bad weather is already apparent, then practices or games should be cancelled by the team coach/manager as soon as possible.

Elaboration:

Immediate Suspension:

When thunder is heard or lightning is seen, even if the storm appears distant, all outdoor activity, including games and practices, must be immediately suspended.

Safe Shelter:

Players, coaches, and spectators should be directed to a safe location, such as a building with wiring and plumbing, or a metal-roofed vehicle.

30-Minute Rule:

After the last flash of lightning or clap of thunder, a 30-minute waiting period is required before any outdoor activity can resume. This is because lightning can still strike even after the immediate thunderstorm has passed.

Decision-Making:

Ultimately, the referee or designated field official (coach or team manager) should have the final say on suspending or restarting practices or games due to lightning.

"Flash-to-Bang" Rule:

The "flash-to-bang" method (counting the seconds between a lightning flash and the thunder) can be used to estimate the distance of the lightning and assess the need to suspend activities.

Blue Sky Warning:

Blue sky and absence of rain do not mean that lightning is safe. Lightning can strike even outside of the rain shaft.

Thunderstorms Return:

Thunderstorms can reverse course and return over an area that they have just passed, so it's important to maintain a 30-minute waiting period after the final flash or clap.

360player is live for all WYSA teams!

360player is live for all WYSA teams!

WYSA made the decision to move to a comprehensive software management system a few months ago. In that time, step 1 has occurred which was the roll-out of the redesigned website that is hosted within the 360player platform.

Step two was to build all the wysa teams within the system, and then add all coaches and players to each team's page.

This step was rolled out over the last week. If you are a parent of a wysa player, you should have received an email to join 360player and your child's team. Part of that step is then creating your children's profile on their team page. Once this is done, all coaches and players on a team are connected within their team's own page which can be used for scheduling and the team's calendar for all players/parents to see. Using the 360player app (from the ios or Play store) is a great way to have your team's schedule and info in your pocket at all times. Coaches can also track attendance, post team info, and share plans with all team members. The third step on the administrative side is that the 360player system will be used for all registrations starting in the summer, so we will no longer use RAMP as our registration software.

If you haven't yet found the invite to join (check your spam folder), reach out to Matt (ed@wysa.ca).

As we progress through spring season, we will start using more and more functions within the platform. Eventually we will incorporate the training session module by summer and the club will no longer use Teamsnap or Sport Session Planner from July 1 onwards.

On April 5, from 9am-12pm, WYSA will be holding a club day. This is a kick-start the spring outdoor season, and will be the official uniform and equipment pick-up day for all recreational team coaches.

Come meet our board and staff reps, and enjoy a snack while talking wysa soccer!

We also have a large quantity of last year's clothing inventory up for sale. This includes Adidas training jackets from 2023 and 2024 models, and all are brand new with the labels still on! Brand new soccer socks will be sold for a toonie each, and black soccer shorts new with labels on for $5 each!

Bring EXACT CASH ONLY as credit cards will not be accepted.

We will be donating 50% of the garage sale proceeds to a charity in West Kelowna!

IMPORTANT SPRING SEASON DATES:

* April 5 - WYSA Club Day - 9am-12pm (Uniform and equipment pick up for coaches, and club "Garage Sale" to sell new clothing items from last season....ie: new soccer socks for a toonie!)

* April 5/6 - TOYSL league play begins

During the meeting, we highlighted key achievements from the past year, including the addition of new leadership staff and highly qualified coaches who are committed to elevating our coaching support and program offerings. We also demonstrated a stronger financial stewardship of the club and introduced new club software designed to improve communication with our membership—making it simpler and more consistent. We discussed the challenges we faced over the past year and shared exciting updates about our strategic direction moving forward. Our Strategic Plan, which outlines our vision for the coming years, is now available on our website ( https://www.wysa.ca/about ). I encourage you to take a look and share any feedback or ideas as we work together to grow and strengthen our programs.

I am also pleased to welcome our new board members - Discipline Director Ken Hutchinson, Director at Large Jacob Salway, and COYSA Representative Jeremy Schaubroeck, who have stepped up to serve in leadership roles. We are very fortunate to have Vice President Chris Fraser and Executive Director at Large Dan Bourbonniere continuing their service on our board for the second year of their term. Your commitment to our players and community is invaluable, and I look forward to working alongside you to continue improving and expanding opportunities for all involved.

I would also like to express a heartfelt thank you to our outgoing board members; President Sandra Campbell, Treasurer Jena Friedrich, Equipment Director Dyllon Lemieux, Uniform Director Eric Scramstad, Discipline Director Michael Duncan, Directors at Large Sean Brush and Tyler Neels, and COYSA Representative Bob Hackman for their dedicated service. Your contributions have made a lasting impact on our association, and we are deeply grateful for the time, effort, and passion you’ve invested in helping us move forward.

WYSA is excited to support all coaches in their coaching pathway. Whether you are a brand new coach, or a coach looking to gain more experience, WYSA will provide financial reimbursement for approved courses.

All coaches with WYSA are required to take a coaching course for their appropriate age group they coach through BC Soccer (BCSA). Please review the info below, and let Jason (WYSA Technical Director - td@wysa.ca) know if you have any questions:

BC SOCCER COACH CERTIFICATION COURSES

We have provided the dome to COYSA on March 30 for certification courses in West Kelowna. These will fill up quickly as they are open to all clubs in the region, so please sign up ASAP. There are other courses possible, but this is nice to have in our backyard of course. Once you complete the course, you should submit that completion confirmation and WYSA will reimburse you for any course fees. These are the courses available, and if you have any questions please reach out to Jason.

MARCH 30 COURSES:

*** Active Start - the course is March 30 from 8:30am-10:30am. Designed for coaches of U4 to U6 players and consists of completing 1.5 hours of online training followed by a 2-hour Practical On-Field Workshop.

*** Fundamentals - the course is March 30 from 8am-11am. Designed for coaches of U7-U9 players. It consists of completing 1.5 hours of online training followed by a 3-hour Practical On-Field Workshop.

*** Learn to Train - the course is March 30 from 11am-3pm. Designed for coaches of U10-U13 players. It consists of completing 2 hours of online training followed by a 4-hour Practical On-Field Workshop.

*** Soccer For Life - the course is March 30 from 11am-3pm. Designed for coaches of U14+. It consists of completing 2 hours of online training followed by a 4-hour Practical On-Field Workshop.

*** C License - please discuss with Jason, as we support a limited number of coaches in this program each year.

DIRECTIONS

The Online Theory Component (Part 1) is the first required step, so please register here ASAP and complete the respective course level on Canada Soccer’s online platform here
After completing step 1, sign up for an account here if you don't already have one. Find the course you need to take, and register for the course. The code to register for a March 30 course in the dome is 12345 .

WYSA also provides regular club education sessions. The first one we're happy to announce for our spring season is an INTRO TO GOALKEEPER TRAINING with Harry Butler. This will take place on April 11 from 530pm-630pm in the West Kelowna dome. This is free to attend, and well worth it for new or experienced coaches to gain more knowledge on the goalkeeper position. WYSA would like to welcome and introduce its new Technical Director, Jason Thompson. Residing in Kelowna, Thompson comes to WYSA with a 20 year background in technical program management and coaching in the Okanagan region. Thompson joins WYSA from Okanagan United FC (formerly Thompson Okanagan FC), where he spent the last 9 years as TOFC’s Technical Director. Thompson also has a strong history with the Whitecaps Okanagan program, having spent 10 years running the Okanagan Academy Centre as its Head Coach, along with coaching duties including summer camps, residential camps and the Prospects program.

Thompson currently holds a Canadian National B license, and a Canadian National Youth license. With his knowledge of the player pathway and an abundance of club contacts throughout the Okanagan, WYSA truly is fortunate to recruit a technical leader with Thompson’s background.

WYSA’s Executive Director, Matt Holbrook, commented “I’ve known Jason a long time as he was TOFC’s TD for 9 of my 12 years when I managed the BC Soccer Premier League. I always respected Jason’s work with TOFC, and how he managed to build a competitive club program that held their own against much larger clubs in the BCSPL. We’ve got big plans on the Westside, and having one of the top Technical Directors in the Okanagan join our team is another step in the right direction”.

Thompson starts with WYSA on March 1, and will hit the ground running with a series of operational and planning meetings getting ready for the April outdoor season.

Westside Youth Soccer is excited to open registration for the 2025 spring outdoor recreational season!

Starting in mid-April, and finishing at the end of June, we are offering ages from U4 through U18 for boys and girls.

WYSA chooses 360Player for its club management software

After an exhaustive search for the best soccer club management software in the market, Westside Youth Soccer is pleased to announce it has chosen 360Player as its new software platform.

Bringing together a premium website, along with comprehensive tools for scheduling, calendars and program registration, 360Player will serve all needs of WYSA as it grows its programs in 2025 and beyond. 360Player is used by leading clubs in Europe such as Juventus, Valencia and Sevilla, along with the Barcelona and Liverpool academies. In North America, clubs such as Rush Soccer, CF Monterrey, Niagara Surf and FC Laval all use the 360Player software platform to streamline and professionalize their club’s administration.

The timeline of WYSA’s integration and rollout is:

* February 15 – New premium website will be launched

* March 1 – Teams entered into the 360Player system, and parents and coaches will be invited through a simple link so that they can start using the software for team communications and scheduling. A full tutorial on how to use the tools will be provided.

* June 1 – Technical staff will start trialing the training library and session planner. If our tech team determines the training session plans and library meet our needs better than SSP, there will be a rollout for coaches to start using in September.

* July 1 – Registration system will be added to start using for winter program registration

WYSA is pleased to confirm we will be hosting a summer soccer camp, focusing on fun and skill development!

And we are excited to confirm the camp will take place in the West Kelowna multi-sport dome so we will beat the summer heat with the air-conditioning. With a 10 to 1 player to coach ratio, and professional coaches leading the staff, this will be an event your child will love.

WYSA welcomes Matt Holbrook as new Executive Director

WYSA would like to welcome and introduce our new Executive Director, Matt Holbrook.

Residing in Kelowna, Matt comes to WYSA with a 20 year background in soccer club, league and event management. Matt worked from 2010-2023 for BC Soccer, first as their in-house Member Services Manager (2 years), and then as the full time contracted General Manager of the BC Soccer Premier League (11 years).

Prior to his time with BC Soccer, Matt held professional club management roles including as the Youth Development Manager for the Vancouver Whitecaps (3 years), which included coaching duties as a Head Coach in the Whitecaps Prospects/SYL program, and as a Staff Coach in the Whitecaps academy program. Matt was also the GM of the Ottawa Fury SC (1 year), and also sat on various working committees over the years including the CSA’s female inclusion/participation national committee. On the business side of sport, Matt held a role as the Sport Tourism Manager for the City of Surrey (2 years), and was also the Co-Founder and Event Manager of the SX Cup soccer tournament series (now the “Premier Soccer Series”) for its first two years.

Matt’s passion for soccer was developed in the Vancouver lower mainland area, first as a youth and men’s premier player, and later with his foray into player and coach development as the Technical Director for the Burnaby Girls SC. With NCCP and USSF national coaching certifications, along with a business background in Human Resources, Matt brings a well-rounded skillset to manage and grow the WYSA club programs.
